Description:
World AID Orphans Day is May7th! TakingITGlobal HIV/AIDS Program in partnership with the AssociationFrancios-Xavier Bagnoud (AFXB) call upon all youth and global citizens to join together in raising awareness about the ciritical problems of the growing population of children left vulnerable in teh wake of the global AIDS pandemic.
“Tens of millions of children have been orphaned or made vulnerable by the disease already, with projections of future impact even more dire. In countries where HIV prevalence is highest, 15 to 20 percent of children under the age of 18 have lost one or both parents to the disease,” said Albina du Boisrouvray,President of AFXB, which initiated this campaign four years ago.
“Such concentrated parental loss is virtually unprecedented in recorded history,” she declared. “Its implications for future societies are unfathomable but surely work to the detriment not only of the children themselves and their communities, but the countries and world they will inherit. The crisis of AIDS orphans is a major humanitarian, economic, social and security challenge that our society must urgently address.”
While calling for the comprehensive care required to raise the world’s orphaned and vulnerable children is always the priority of World AIDS Orphans Day each year, specific attention will be focused on one aspect of that care which is in need of immediate attention.
This year attention is focused on the urgent need for ensuring orphans’ access to schools by abolishing the fees millions of these children are currently required to pay in order to secure access to the classroom.
It is shocking to learn that the majority of orphans in the world are obliged to pay school fees. In those countries worst affected by HIV/AIDS, economic hardship means that the governments cannot guarantee free education for all. As a result, orphan children and those deprived of resources often leave school early.
Education is one of the most effective means to fight AIDS: Education saves children’s lives and gives them the power to control their destiny!
In the worst-affected AIDS areas, 50 dollars per year per child is enough to cover school fees and thus give these children the right to free education - just as children living in wealthy countries have.
On World AIDS Orphans’ Day, FXB, and all those who share its commitment to vulnerable children urge the international community to give these children the resources they need to survive. Education is their basic right, after all, and FXB appeals to governments to abolish school fees for all orphans and vulnerable children throughout the world.
