Name: HIV/AIDS Prevention and Treatment Advocacy Project [PTAP] - Nigeria
Categories: Health & Wellness
Human Rights & Equity

Description:
The spread of HIV/AIDS remains a huge challenge: evidence shows an increase in infection rates worldwide and dangerous new epicenters of HIV transmission are being established. 1n 2003, an estimated 4.8 million people were newly infected with HIV, more than any other previous year. Rates of infection are still on the rise in many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria. In deed in 2003 alone, an estimated 3 million people in the region became newly infected.

Today, expanded access to ART is bringing hope to millions of people living with HIV; but prevention programming is not being expanded at the same rate. Dramatically expanded and improved prevention programming alongside new and existing treatment programmes could have a profound positive impact on the overall national response to HIV/AIDS.

The PTAP Coalition is a movement poised for a paradigm shift in the HIV/AIDS intervention strategies; ALIGNING TREATMENT AND PREVENTION IN AN ERA OF INCREASED ACCESS TO ARVs.

The movement is set to achieve the following objectives in the next 5 years:

•build necessary skills and capacities for effective advocacy, networking and communication activities around the integration of prevention with expanded treatment access initiatives;

•create country profiles that identify gaps, needs, opportunities and risks, around the integration of prevention with expanded treatment access initiatives, and develop appropriate strategies to address them;

•monitor and evaluate project progress, national plans and global commitments around the integration of prevention with expanded treatment access initiatives; and

•document and disseminate lessons learned to serve on-going advocacy initiatives, programme and policy development around the integration of prevention with expanded treatment initiatives.
